Nymphadora Tonks Lupin
'Tonks' prior to marriage, 'Dora' after marriage
c.1973 (approximate year determined by the Harry Potter Lexicon
May 2, 1998
Cause of Death:
Killed by Bellatrix Lestrange when fighting for the Order at the Battle of Hogwarts.
Mother, Andromeda Black Tonks, is a pure-blood. Father, Ted Tonks, is a muggle-born.
Years Attended Hogwarts:
Married to Remus. They wed during the summer of 1997.
One son named Teddy Remus Lupin. He was born during April of 1998.
Auror and part of the Order of the Phoenix.
Dora got top marks in the Concealment and Disguise component of her Auror training due to being a Metamorphmagus but, because she is so clumsy, she almost failed the Stealth and Tracking component. She also has a lot of trouble with 'household' cleaning spells.
Dora is fun, kind, intelligent, clumsy, and very loyal. She also appears to be quite emotional; she changes her hair colour depending on her mood and she seems to find it difficult to control her emotions - even loosing her Metamorphmagus abilities temporarily and having her patronus change into a werewolf after she had fallen in love with Remus. Also, despite being clever enough to become an Auror, she was not made a prefect at school because she had a fondness for mischief.
Metamorphmagus, so can change appearance at will. However, she prefers to retain her natural pale skin, heart-shaped face, and dark eyes. She also has a preference for short bubblegum pink or blond hair.
Ted Remus Lupin
Both his mother and father are half-blood.
His grandmother, Andromeda Black Tonks.
Harry Potter. Although he lives with his grandmother, he also spends a lot of time with his godfather, having dinner at Harry's house around four times a week.
Years Attended Hogwarts:
Unknown; probably Gryffindor or Hufflepuff.
At 19 years of age, he is unmarried but in a serious relationship with Victoire Weasley. She is Bill and Fleur's eldest daughter and happened to be born on May 2, 1999 which was the one year anniversary of Remus and Dora's death.
Unknown but if he is anything like his parents, then he might find it appealing to be an Auror.
Unknown but if he has inherited his mother and father's personalities then he would be intelligent and kind, with a good sense of humour and a liking for mischief.
When he was born, Dora thought he looked a lot like Remus, while Remus thought he looked like Dora. He is also a Metamorphmagus like his mother. As a baby, his hair colour varied between black, ginger, and turquoise.
Relationship Between Remus, Dora, and Teddy
Remus and Dora met in 1995 when the Order of the Phoenix was reformed in response to Voldemort's return. Given that Dora was only 22 or 23 at this point, it is clear that she was too young to be a member of the Order during the first war but despite this, she was keen to join the fight in the second war. This in itself says something of her character; in spite of her youth, she was one of the only Aurors who was loyal to Dumbledore and believed that Voldemort was back, despite the Ministry of Magic trying to convince the wizarding world otherwise.
We don't know much about Remus and Dora's early relationship but it was clear that they enjoyed each others company and were often seen chatting together at the kitchen table of the Order headquarters. Although Dora was a fair bit younger than her new friend, this didn't seem to matter to either of them at the time. In fact, her personality is such that she seems like a logical friend for both Remus and Sirius. Not only is she fun, clever, and mischievous (perhaps a potential candidate for a Marauder had she belonged to that generation) but she is also non-judgemental and loyal – important traits given that Remus is a werewolf.
It can be assumed that both had developed feelings for each other beyond friendship over the course of the year, but these were not acted upon until the summer of 1996 when Dora made her feelings known to Remus – perhaps as a result of him having to take on the particularly dangerous mission for the Order of living 'underground' with other werewolves (although this is speculation). As previously said, Remus must have felt something back toward Dora but even so, he refused to acknowledge it, instead insisting that he was "too old, too poor, and too dangerous" for her. Despite this, Dora's loyalty and intensity of feeling shines through as she doesn't give up on him throughout the next year. Indeed, even her Patronus and physical appearance change to reflect her love for Remus.
In mid-1997, when both Dora and Remus witness Fleur's declaration that she will continue to love Bill despite him having been attacked by a werewolf, Dora completely looses the ability to control her emotions and makes her love for Remus publicly known. At this point, Mr and Mrs Weasley, along with Minerva McGonagall, also tell Remus that they believe that he has been taking the wrong line in his relationship with Dora. This conversation is cut short but the next time we see the pair, they are attending Dumbledore's funeral together, holding hands.
Although we don't know exactly what happened after this, or why Remus finally succumbed to his love for Dora, it is clear that their relationship moved fast. Only mere months after the funeral, they commit to each other in a hushed, hurried wedding and, within weeks of this, Dora falls pregnant. For a man who had taken a year to finally come to terms with the fact that he was in love with Dora, one might suggest that, regardless of the intensity of love Remus was feeling, the speed of these happy events could have been going too fast for him; his preference for deliberate, well-thought out decision making seems to have been thrown to the wind during this emotion charged period of time. Reflecting this, just as the pair start to settle down into married life, Remus's old fears about how his lycanthropy would affect his new family resurface.
He believes that he has made Dora an outcast by marrying her. He also irrationally believes that their unborn child may be a werewolf and that even if it isn't, that it will surely grow up to be ashamed of having a father with the condition. This anxiety reaches a climax, however, when the Ministry of Magic falls to the Death Eaters. Although he clearly still loves his wife and unborn child, he comes to the conclusion that they will be safer without him under the new Death Eater regime which condemns werewolves as well as those associated with werewolves.
At this point, he does briefly leave Dora, after moving her into the safety and protection of her parents' home. After finding Harry – Remus intended to try and help him with his Horcrux mission – and explaining his decision, the latter is angered; being an orphan himself, he tells Remus that he believes parents should never leave their children unless they have no choice. He goes on to say that he believes Remus's actions to be cowardly. Although Harry's reaction initially embarrasses and hurts Remus, he comes to see that Harry is right. He moves back in with Dora and ultimately comes to realise that he is not defined by his lycanthropy; that the love he and Dora share, along with the love he feels for his child, is more important than his being a werewolf.
The couple stay together and, in April of 1998, their beautiful baby son is born. They name him Teddy, in honour of Dora's father who had been murdered by Death Eaters, and even at birth, Teddy shows the signs of being a Metamorphmagus like his mother. Remus is clearly giddy with delight to know that his family is now complete and a few hours after the birth, he finds Harry at Bill and Fleur's home to ask him to be godfather.
Only a few weeks after this joyous event, Remus ends up fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts "trying to make a world in which [Teddy] could live a happier life". Aside from this motive for fighting, the fact that he carries Teddy's photograph with him during the battle also indicates just how much love he feels for his new son. Tragically, however, only a short time into the battle, Remus is killed at the hand of Dolohov. Dora, who Remus had wanted to stay under protection at home with Teddy, couldn't stand not knowing if her husband was safe and also came to the battle. It seems safe to assume that she ended up finding her husband's body and fought to gain revenge for his death but tragically, she was also killed - leaving Teddy an orphan, like Harry had been.
From this point on, Teddy is raised by his grandmother and godfather. Although this is no substitute for the wonderful parents that he should have had, at least he was able to lead a safe life in world free of Voldemort; exactly what Remus and Dora would have wanted for him. Personally, I like to think that Teddy would have been raised to know how much Remus and Dora loved him, and would always carry his parents' spirits with him throughout his life.
